    Happy BirdDay!

    ABC_6thbirdday_1920x1080_social.png

Six years ago today, a little studio in Finland came out with a casual mobile game. It was the company’s 52nd title since starting out in 2003. But this game was different. This game was Angry Birds!

Since then, the Angry Birds series of games has been downloaded more than 3 billion times, and we’re currently closing in on half a billion for this year alone. It is the most downloaded mobile game of all time, and enjoys more than 90 percent brand recognition across the planet.

Indeed, Mashable just came out with a list of the 100 best iPhone apps of all time, and Angry Birds clocks in as the highest ranked game on the editors’ list of all-time App Store heavies. “It was the iPhone’s first transmedia smash, and there's something still perfect and inspiring about the original,” the editors write. “While mobile game fads may change, it has stood the test of time.”

In fact, the original Angry Birds is still a live operation, and has just been updated again with 15 new BirdDay-inspired levels. So fire up your phone and get back to pig-popping basics!

And when you need a breather between toppling towers, check out our Facebook page. We’re teaming up with When Pigs Swim, Grand Isle Resort & Spa and Exuma Water Sports and giving away a trip to the Bahamas to swim with the pigs of the real-life Piggy Island – what could be a better BirdDay present than that?

    Information regarding Angry Birds 2

It has come to Rovio’s attention that many iOS apps on Chinese-language App Stores have been made vulnerable to a malware attack. The Chinese build of Angry Birds 2, which is available only on the App Store in Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, is one of the apps made vulnerable. All other builds of Angry Birds 2 available in other countries are completely safe and secure.

An update of Angry Birds 2 that fixes the issue for users of the Chinese edition is coming very shortly.

Rovio <3 Shakira: The beginning of a beautiful friendship

Players of Angry Birds POP! are in for a hip-shaking surprise the next time they log in to take on Gale and her minions. Shakira Bird has joined the flock!

How exactly did the Colombian superstar find her way to Piggy Island?

“Everybody at Rovio loves making games and loves playing games,” explains Peter Vesterbacka, Rovio’s Mighty Eagle. “I have always believed that this is the most important thing no matter what you do -- there is no substitute for this passion and love in the final products. The great thing with passion is that it's very contagious. And people always love working with other passionate people.”

Which brings us to a scene in Barcelona earlier this year.

“I was very lucky to meet with Shakira at Camp Nou,” Vesterbacka continues. “Just like everybody at Rovio loves games, Shakira loves music. Within five minutes it was very clear that we had to do something together. I'm really happy to see the first result of our collaboration. The team has done a fantastic job in designing the new bird. But as they say in Casablanca, this is only the beginning of a beautiful friendship. You will see the Shakira Bird in Angry Birds Friends and Angry Birds 2 very soon as well.”

Could Rovio and Shakira take their collaboration even further?

“Who knows what else we'll come up with when we put our heads together,” Vesterbacka reckons. “But with 3 billion copies of Angry Birds games out there and with the massive fan base of Shakira, you can be sure the planet will know about it.”

Rovio & NASA collaborate to raise awareness of New Horizon’s historic Pluto flyby

It all started in 2011, when a simple tweet from NASA’s Bob Jacobs sparked a discussion between the two organisations that has since then resulted in activities such as the historical launch of Rovio’s Angry Birds Space game from the International Space Station, several Angry Birds themed Space Centers and more.

The latest collaboration between Rovio & NASA is a fun learning experience in the form of   the Angry Birds Space Solar System game update. With the new episode we learn about the planets in our solar system and follow NASA’s New Horizons mission. Rovio was proud to raise awareness toward the mission through an in-game countdown to the moment of the flyby.

Additionally, with the Pluto-clicker functionality in Angry Birds Space, players were able to tap for Pluto to be a planet again. The clicker gathered more than 414 368 863 million +1 taps - at least the Angry Birds fans clearly want Pluto to get back to planethood!

Rovio and NASA also worked together on the new Rocket Science Show mini series launched in the Angry Birds Space game and on Toons.TV. The Rocket Science Show features NASA experts talking about exciting topics like the solar system, New Horizons and the Pluto flyby - complemented with Angry Birds fun!

The whole Rovio team is super excited to work with NASA on increasing awareness for New Horizons, the solar system and beyond. Learning about the solar system is now as easy as playing a game, a game of Angry Birds Space.

Check out the video below or head to NASA’s site to learn more about the New Horizons mission!

    Angry at education injustice!

The Oslo Education Summit, July 6th and 7th, was an impressive gathering of thought leaders, business leaders, education experts and world leaders. The discussions were intense and the sense of urgency was clear – we heard that there are not only 58 million children who are not in school but that the figure had actually escalated to 59 million.

Every single child deserves to learn. But it´s not enough to get all kids to school, we must also ensure that they get the best possible education. This requires engagement and fun and learning the important 21st century skills. We already know how to provide fun learning, we should just start distributing it evenly.

Summits where people passionately talk about important issues are definitely needed but not enough to solve the problem. These gatherings must absolutely lead to real action and active partnerships that start working toward the millennial goals we all have failed to reach. The buzz among the summit participants was tangible and we believe that now is the time for joint activities.

Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary General at Oslo Education Summit: “I welcome the #UpForSchool movement – they have enlisted the Angry Birds. My grandson loves that game so I asked him what they are so angry about. He said they blow up pigs. But when it comes to education they are angry at injustice.”

    Peter Vesterbacka and Ban Ki-moon

The Mighty Eagle and Ban Ki-moon discussing the future of education and #funlearning.

P.S. As if you didn't know, the birds are angry because the pigs are after their eggs.

Angry Birds Fight! launches in Asia Pacific Countries on both iOS and Android!

We are very proud to announce Angry Birds Fight! is now launched in Asia Pacific countries on iOS and Android today. Angry Birds Fight! will continue its expansion to rest of world in early summer 2015.

Rovio’s very first game developed entirely in Japan is now available in Asian Pacific countries! Angry Birds Fight! was created together with Japanese developer KITERETSU Inc. - to capture the essence of the Japanese Fight!ing. All the great birds in Western world can also start to stretch their feathers - Angry Birds Fight! will be launched there on 11th June.

Here is the cool animation to celebrate Asia Pacific launch of Fight!. Great mash-up of Asian cultural tastes with Flocks and Pigs.

However, at the moment, it is all about Asia for Angry Birds Fight!. And so we shoot a couple of questions to Katsumi Oikawa, Rovio’s Country Manager in Japan: how are the birds fighting in Japan?

Konnichiwa, Katsumi-san! What excites you the most in the new Angry Birds Fight! game?

This game is Rovio's first game developed in Japan with Kiteretsu, Inc., and so we are able to enjoy a new kind of Angry Birds twist in Fight!

Angry Birds Fight! is a real time person vs. person game. In it you can fight live with a real person, which is a fun. And you can see how you are ranked among all the players.

The more you play, the stronger you become. Practising develops you - just like in real life. You can also strategically use skills and gems to build your favourite birds into good shape. Its also possible to invite one’s own friends to Fight! via Facebook. That’s the way to increase strength, too.

Which are the most favourite Angry Birds characters in Japan?

It has to be Red - the most iconic bird. But other birds are starting to Fight! for the attention and fans, as well. We have many great bird-personalities in our gang - I’m sure all of them will appeal to different people.

How does the Japanese gaming differ from European?

Japan is one of the largest mobile gaming market as measured by sales, and Japanese people tend to like role playing games with continuous live operations. That’s part of the Japanese flavour in Angry Birds Fight!.

In general, how are Angry Birds perceived in Japan?

Angry Birds are seen as a cute and humorous characters. I see a lot of potential with Angry Birds in Japan - their unique characters are able to truly Fight! their way into the hearts of Japanese mobile game players. With this new, Japan-developed AB Fight! our birds have great opportunity to grow in Japan, both in terms of game playes and Angry Birds fans.

What’s your personal tip to become an Angry Birds Fight! champion?

Fight it out. Practice makes perfect!
